Academic Program

All Anthropology classes will be taught by SDCC Professor Steve Bouscaren. All other courses will be taught by on-site professors. Students must enroll in at least 12 units. The Anthropology 265C is a required class. All Classes transfer to CSU, UC, and/or private college or university (excluding Anthropology 265C, CSU and private university transferable only). Course offerings are subject to change prior to departure.

Anthropology 102, Introduction to Physical Anthropology - Bouscaren (3 units)

A survey of human evolution, variation, and adaptation through the study of primates, human heredity, variability of modern populations, and of the hominid fossil record.

Anthropology 103, Introduction to Cultural Anthropology - Bouscaren (3 units)

A cross-cultural approach to studying how various peoples around the world have adapted to their environments and developed behaviors to meet their biological, economic, psychological, social, and political needs among others. There will be an emphasis on Latin America in this course.This course will begin in San Diego for two weeks prior to departure.

Anthropology 215, Cultures of Latin America - Bouscaren (3 units)

A review of the non-industrialized peoples living in contemporary Latin America and a comparison with their urban counterparts. Contemporary anthropological research, ethno-historic, historic and archaeological data will be used to look at the diversity of cultures throughout Latin America with an emphasis on South America. This course will begin in San Diego, two weeks prior to departure to Buenos Aires.This course will begin in San Diego for two weeks prior to departure.

Anthropology 265C, Argentinean Life and Culture - Study Abroad - Bouscaren (3 units) (Required class for all students)

Observe, reflect upon, and discuss various aspects of Argentine Life and Culture from an anthropological perspective. Students will observe and participate in the areas of arts, sports, contemporary history, politics and economics. Field trips will enhance lectures, given by Argentines, on various themes.

HISTORY 115B, History of the Americas II - On-site instructor (3 units)

This course provides a framework for interpreting the history of the Americas from the 19th century into the 21st century. This survey examines the independence movements and the development of autonomous nation states throughout the Americas. There will be an emphasis on Latin America in this course.

MUSIC 109, World Music - On-site instructor (3 units)

This music survey course explores the music cultures of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean and other areas with resident populations in San Diego. An emphasis is placed on understanding and appreciation from non-ethnocentric viewpoints. There will be an emphasis on Latin America in this course.

SPANISH 101, First Course in Spanish - On-site instructor (5 units)

This is an entry level course designed to introduce students to the Spanish language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPANISH 102, Second Course in Spanish - On-site instructor (5 units)

This is a continuation of Spanish 101. In this interactive course, students use listening, reading, speaking and writing at a more complex level.

SPANISH 201, Third Course in Spanish - On-site instructor (5 units)

This course is an interactive study of Spanish at the intermediate level with increased emphasis on reading and writing while listening and speaking skills continue to develop.

SPANISH 202, Fourth Course in Spanish - On-site instructor (5 units)

This course is offered as an advanced intermediate level course. It reviews and furthers grammatical features in Spanish through oral and written communication within a cultural background.
