Expanish staff members work on an individual basis with each student to get their financial aid transferred from their home institution for their Expanish program abroad. For instance, students in the United States are federally eligible to receive aid from their university regardless of whether or not their program is a necessary part of their degree, and are eligible to receive funding for more than just their tuition costs, including expenses such as travel and housing. Our goal is to make study abroad attainable for students, no matter what their circumstance.
Financial Aid Transfer
Please note the following procedure pertains to students in the United States who are citizens of the country; please Contact Us if you are from a different country and would like help determining the process for a financial aid transfer.
In order to transfer the financial aid from your home institution, you will first need to check with your Financial Aid Department to find out their policy on transferring funds to student study abroad programs. Here are the steps you can take in order to transfer your financial aid to your Expanish program abroad:
- Apply for financial aid from your university as you usually do each year by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other appropriate home institution documents.
- Make an appointment to speak with someone in your Financial Aid Department in order to determine if you aid will transfer to Expanish programs. (NOTE: It is important to speak to an academic advisor beforehand in order to ensure that your credits will be eligible for transfer back to your home institution, as this oftentimes determines study abroad financial air eligibility).
- If your Financial Aid Department does allow study abroad aid transfers, you will generally need to turn in a program approval letter from Expanish which you will receive once you turn in your completed application and additional documents, as well as a form generally known as a “consortium agreement” that you will need to ask for from your Financial Aid Department. Fill out any applicable portions of this form and then contact your Expanish student advisor so that Expanish can complete the rest of the form, in order to determine your costs for your time abroad and how much aid should be disbursed.
- Once you have turned in all of your documents, you will receive news from your Financial Aid Department about the amount of your aid award. Follow their instructions to accept the aid as soon as possible and turn in any remaining paperwork.
- Once the aid has been accepted and approved, fill out the appropriate acceptance paperwork as directed by your Financial Aid Department.
- You will then need to turn in a written consent for a financial aid transfer from your home institution financial aid office upon admission approval to Expanish [no later than sixty (60) days before program start date], and ensure balance is paid in full by thirty (30) days before program start date.
If the student would like the help of Expanish in negotiating any part of this process, the student must advise the University Staff (
